Church of St. Stephen Protomartyr

We have the first mention of the Diaconia of St. Stephen in 1296 and the Municipality of Bedizzole had full rights of ownership and patronage and provided for all expenses. We also know that it was re-consecrated on December 13, 1506 by Msgr. Marco Saracco Archbishop of Lepanto vicar of Bishop Paolo Zane having been enlarged with 3 new Chapels (St. Stephen in the center, that of the Blessed Sacrament of Saints Fabian, Sebastian and Rocco on the two sides).

The new archpriest Rev. Lelio Emigli (Borgo S.Giacomo, 1684 – Bedizzole, July 7, 1770) wanted to build a new church since the old Diaconia was cramped is not up to the needs of the faithful.

The Vicinia of December 28, 1720 decided almost unanimously to build a new building the work began on May 8, 1721 on the feast of the patron saints Hermolaus and Acacius.

On April 21, 1760 H.E. Bishop John Molin consecrated this church with its monumental altar. The facade is pure Baroque with double register with statues of saints and a graceful recent portal the statue si S. Stefano by Alessandro Calegari.

The architect of the church was Mr. Antonio Spaccio or Spazzi, a distinguished family of master builders, plasterers and designers active from the 17th to the 18th century. On the facade are statues by Alessandro Calegari and Gelfino Calegari.
